The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is run by Australia’s National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). It is for eligible Australians born with or acquiring a permanent and significant disability. A permanent disability refers to a person’s disability that is likely to be lifelong. A significant disability implies that the disability will have a large impact on the person’s ability to perform daily activities.
The NDIS expects to support around 500,000 disabled Australians for a five-year period that began in 2019. It supports registered NDIS providers in Sydney and other areas under a comprehensive scheme to directly assist disabled people and their families and careers. The NDIS engages community partners from qualified and experienced organisations with a strong understanding of disability needs in their community.
The NDIS is delivered across Australia with the help of NDIS providers and community participation. They provide essential services and support to eligible beneficiaries to fulfil their care needs. An NDIS provider can be an individual, organisation, or business registered with the NDIS to offer funded services. NDIS-registered providers have various skills and expertise to meet different needs, such as supported independent living. Registered providers must meet the government’s safety and quality standards.
Eligible self-managing participants may also use unregistered NDIS providers for various needs. However, there are exclusive benefits to registered members, such as: Access to a competitive and innovative marketplace Marketing yourself as a registered member Access to information and updates from NDIS and training tools and resources for the team Becoming an NDIS registered provider is subject to meeting quality and safety conditions stipulated by the government. Unregistered providers have not met government requirements, which may limit their access to NDIA–approved lists.
